I would call the company or email and ask them did they recieve my application and let them know that you are interesting in becoming an potential candidate with their company. You can also go the company in person. I would wait about 1-3 weeks. Some human resources manager and recruiter will go through the application and chose the candidates that they will be best for the company.

I suggest that you follow up with them if you hear nothing by two weeks. Don't give up hope though. Some companies will only persue those that actively seek the position. This helps them weed out people that are sending out resumes or apps to lots of companies.
Just give a call to a manager if it is a small company or human resources if it is larger company. Let them know that you are still interested in the position and would like to take an interview if your app has been reviewed.

Before you give up hope, why don't you call the company. Unless they specifically asked for no phone calls, a quick jingle to the Human Resources person wouldn't be a bad idea. This lets the company know that you are very interested in interviewing and working with them.

You need to be more aggressive in this economy, plain and simple.

You can call to "make sure they got it." and then ask them when you should expect a call, and that you are really interested in the position. You shouldn't be waiting for them though, keep looking at other companies and jobs.

2-3 weeks, depending on the "name recognition" of the company, the job, and the number of resumes received.

I would recommend that you pursue other opportunities as they arise. You may find yourself in a position where two employers are bidding for your services.
