Jesus said if some one strikes you turn the other cheek. is this literal ? I would be a stretch to include mass murder ..my answer is no . but the whole question of war is different . All the terrorist who committed 9/11 died . And very likely did not go to heaven. If we could kill only real lunatic terrorist I would say that war would be helpful. I am afraid that too many innocent were killed in response and that has hurt the effort tremendously .. I"m not sure where God and the Bible comes into it.

Forget the few that speak of things which they know either nothing about or nonsense from sources which are only misinformed chatterboxes. How do we know what God thinks? I certainly don't. He didn't mention it at lunch. Answer this: Would you rather be killed by an enemy or live? Human beings, when attacked, will retaliate. period. There are exceptions to everything, of course, but those that say turn the other cheek usually are risking someone else's cheeks, from the comfort of thier easy chair. No one likes war, and those that say they do never risked a damn thing, and would run, as cowards always do.----Rat

Depends on what bible thumpers and what war....

There have been religious leaders throughout history that have not only endorse/approved war as justified but have also participated in wars. There are quite a few conflicts in the Bible itself.

Technically, "turn the other cheek" should apply. Ironically, turning the other cheek is the best way to ensure the survival of American ideals.

The terrorists don't have the capability to destroy us. We are vastly superior to them. We are a more dominant civilization by any measure. Military, science, economy, culture, human rights, etc. The terrorists can't destroy us - only we can do that to ourselves.

Unfortunately, in an effort to fight terrorists we, ourselves, have compromised our American ideals. Freedoms are being taken away, our military is stretched, our government has taken on considerable debt, etc. The only way the terrorists can defeat us is if they convince us to defeat ourselves.

If we turn the other cheek, we will remain the dominant country in the world... otherwise.... /shrug

Do you have any wee inkling of how loaded your question really is?

Of course you do! Which means you are really not interested in any answer from a "Bible thumper..."

I find that improving this LACK of Constitutional understanding among Americans to be almost as vital as the US continuing to fight terrorism...

No, I don't think that turning the other cheek is appropriate. We need to go after those behind the act, not the person that we want to go after.

that is really asking "too much" and mis-interpreting the biblical words -- if not their exact meaning. G-d has nothing to do with war and/or peace -- it is the humans who make war and/or peace. Once that in mind -- we will not look for supernatural powers to keep our sanity....

The "turn the other cheek" concept applies to personal insults, not to murder. So no, it does nto apply to 9/11.

And yes, it is right to get them before they get us. Terrorists are genuinely evil.

No - not if you are a fundamentalist christian republican. "The humans make war, not god"

Rationalization of the most twisted kind.
