I ought to agree with you - my head says you are right, but my heart.... my heart just loves the whole programme.

Maybe we could agree on a whole bunch of things that we could cancel first to redirect the money to fix things up here on earth before they cancel the space programme?

Hmmm.... for starters, how about cancelling: war; missile defence; R&D on new stupid household chemicals; hummers; pr0n (that one would release billions into the economy!); etc etc.

No, but you may be myopic, liberal, young, naive etc. Are you an intern at the UN? The NASA budget is15B per year, sounds like a lot but we spend that much in a Iraq every 10-14 days. China, and more recently India, spend about half that on their space programs yet have a far more dire situation when it comes to poverty. Both those countries have concluded that money earmarked for space would have minimum impact if diverted to social issues.

This week two NASA employees were honored with the Nobel prize for Physics. There will always be a need for a world leader in Space Exploration and the technology spawned from such endeavors can be adapted for commercial /personal use. Think Plasma Screens, Wireless headsets, Cell phone technology and lithium batteries. These item weren't invented in Japan, Korea or Singapore.

If we as a nation were to become totally society focused we end up like France or Germany. Meek, arrogant and ungrateful is no way to go through life. There is no drive or ambition in those feckless nations. I know, I lived there. What have they developed lately ?(Germany) the automobile and machine gun- sure, that was 100 years ago ( France) clay court tennis and composite racing skis in 1960s?

If you intend to badmouth our country on its initiative and vision for the future abandon the obtuse adjectives (stupid) and insert some facts!

There really aren't that many manned space missions these days, because its too little commercial return for alot of expenditure. Most stuff now is putting communications, entertainment and military satellites into orbit.
I think Space exploration can be a positive thing for the human race to focus on, but you are right in some respects, since there are alot of problems that need to be sorted out before its a real goer.
I would point out that defence spending far eclipses space missions. What would you rather see the money spent on, spaceships or nuclear weapons?

I'd rather spend billions on space exploration and scientific research than war.

That said, a great many inventions and technology have come out of the space program. Worth it, possibly...

The space programme doesn't cost as much as they say it does, the money goes on hats and cigars for the gaffer.
Also, why won't the government let private companies bid for space missions? They always get outbid from NASA, who then end up spending twice as much as the original private bid!

It is not at all - if anything we should be spending ten times more! Space exploration is the next great thing and we should get on with it before we run out of oil.

We should be spending trillions - we want to go to the moon ... and Mars ... and every place this Universe has to offer.

Just throwing money at problems isn't a solution. The earth is becoming an increasingly dangerous and unstable place...I think it would be foolish to abandon missions into space that might actually benefit us one day...besides,man has always had a strong desire for exploration.

The way we're destroying the earth we might end up living on one of them planets so don't greet about it, and do you honestly think if the good old U'S' of A' abandoned all it's space research it would give trhe cash to the needy countries of the world... get real they'd try'n improve on their hardware for war.

Spending 400 billion on Iraq to just line Cheney's pocket was more ridiculous. NASA at least gets results.
