3 friends get the last hotel room and pay $10.00 each. The desk clerk feels badly that he overcharded them so he gives the bellhop $5.00 to give back to them. The bellhop pockets $2.00 and gives the 3 roomies $3.00.
So they ended up paying $9.00 each for the room. Remember, the bellhop kept $2.00. Lets total it up:

3 x $9.00====$27.00

Bellhop ..............2.00

TOTAL----------$29.00

Where did the other $1.00 GO?

Multiplication only, no $25.00 blah, blah, blah.

The hotel overcharged the friends by $5. Meaning that the room cost them $25, $8.33 each. You give each of them $1 back, they effectively paid $9.33.

$9.33 x 3 = 28.00(rounded)

$2 to the trustworthy bellhop

Total = $30.

there is no $30. look at it a different way. the 3 people pay $9 each to make $27 which includes a $2 tip. that way the 3 people are $9 less, the bellhop is $2 up and the $25 went to the owner of the hotel. the $2 shouldnt be added on to the $27 but taken away to make the amount the 3 people paid toward the room.

$3 passed from the three friends to the clerk, then to the bellhop, then back to the friends, and so the friends paid $27 for the room. The clerk has $25 of it and the bellhop has the other $2 of it. $25 + $2 = $27.
Why are you adding the $2 to the $27? That makes no sense.

It is the way you worded the problem that makes it seem like there's a missing dollar. But there isn't...

The 3 tenants have $3.00. (The bellhop gave it to them.)

The bellhop has $2.00. (He kept for himself.)

The desk clerk has $25.00 ($30.00 - $5.00 = $25.00)

TOTAL = $3.00 + $2.00 + $25.00 = $30.00

No money was lost in this story.

Ah, but your logical fallacy is in the details.

The gentlemen did NOT pay $30 total, they only paid $27 (3 x $9).
Since the bill was only $25, and the bellboy kept $2, that means

$25 + $2 = $27 = 3 x $9

QED.

They didnt pay 9 for the room - they paid 10 and then other things happend after that.

They all got 1 dollar back means "they all got 1 dallar back" - it doesnt mean they all paid 9 for the room.
