This Is actually quite simple. If two molecules come close enough together and their interaction is such that energy is given off, then they will automatically self-assemble. The second law of thermodynamics rules these sorts of interactions. A good example is Hydrogen and Oxygen, which will automatically self assemble into H2O or water, giving off energy in the process. This is why the space shuttle does not need a spark plug or other sort of ignition system. When the liquid Hydrogen and liquid Oxygen meet, they self-assemble into water!!
