I am going to a big party this weekend and my dress is a simple knee length, sexy black dress. I want to avoid looking like all the other black simple dresses. How can I accessorize? The dress is form fitting with a plunging, square neckline (just above the breast). It has a little thin attached belt (black also) right under the breast (kind of empire waisted ) The dress stops just below the knee. Any jewelry? what type of shoe?

OMG!!! there are soooooo many ways to do that!! But I'll
just tell you 3ways.
1.add a big pop of color with your favorite color in a handbag
red,hot pink, lime, blue, but ceap it simple.
2.a brooch on your hip left or right side or the classical spot at the top of your chest ether side l/r .
3. a hat any color.
REMBER YOU CAN MIX AND MACH 123 BUT AS LONG AS THE COLORS MACH!!!!!!

Ok, we have to address something I've not seen yet...how much standing and walking will you be doing? Lots of women forget to think about this. Heels are a way to accent legs...heels make the leg look longer, with a small anklette (you can you a thin chain bracelet at times to fill this in.) Or like the one gentleman suggested...a semi high heel with a pretty thin width ribbon wound about the ankle and tied at the side or front up at the calf can also accent the legs.
Heels are nice, but try on a few high heels and see which one you think you'd be able to handle if it's going to be "hours" of walking about and standing...(you can also cheat some and actually sit down now and then to give your feet a rest.)

Now for the dress, sounds classic especially with the belt at the breast level. Is it a small belt buckle? or large? You might be able to take a nice scarf, have you seen the rhinestone style round catches that they have? Some square-knot in gold or silver (I like a knot made of both) that would be perfect - this would go at the center of the breast area. The scarf could be black or a contrasting color, some go for bold, but lighter shades can suggest more demur grace. Look for something that will highlight your eye color or hair color that is also complimenting to skin tone. The circle or square....try both to see which works better would be connected right at the front center below breast and the lengths of scarf would then drop down from there.
Another accent would be to have a shawl...very elegant, matching to scarf or black....that would cover the shoulders in a graceful drape. Now if you've thin long neck most delicate chains with some glitter would be great. Now with that neckline, have you ever considered an invisible neckace?
It's gold or silver balls, tiny...with small pearls or jet or even cubic zirconia (catches the lights wonderfully) and these are on a very clear line that makes it almost invisible and the necklace sort of floats there and they have to get close to see what's holding up the beads and sparkle.
A slick trick is to take an old blush brush and dip it into gold and silver or irridesant sparkles and lightly brush them onto the material in just the right areas to attract light and shine when you walk. If you have some glitter body spray...that too would be a great way to shine....a bit on each cheek bone...a tiny accent over on the arch of the eyebrow and along the arm - outside at shoulder down to the inside of the elbow..

It all depends on the sort of party, the style of a simple black dress can go from high class funtion to casual gathering, it all depends on what you add to the basic package. Above all - make sure that you are going to be comfortable in the long run and take some breaks to rest and restore your energy with non-alch. drinks...(mostly due to the fact alch. will not prevent dehydration)
and another point many tend to forget....make sure that whatever you wear is lady's room agreeable....nothing like having to relieve yourself and not being able to get in and out of some hard to deal with outfit...you should not have to be a quick change artist to take a call of nature. *lol*

Hope you have a nice time...

since the neckline on your dress is square, try going with a shorter necklace with round beads. something that has the shape of a pearl necklace, but with much bigger and bolder beads. red and yellow are rather overdone this season, so try to find some great greenish beads. something round, simple, and chic. as for shoes - a strappy high heel would probably look nice. preferablly something greenish - steve madden heels would probably have something like that - or a neutral or black. i hope this was of some help to you, and that you find the perfect accesories!

A beautiful pashmina to wear over the shouldes, perhaps a gold pin of some sort on the chest (right or left), a bangle bracelet. Stockings and high heels. Good perfume.

from a guys perspective I'd like to see you with those shoes that lace up around your calf and a choker type collar/necklace (coz I assume you have a nice chest that this dress will be attracting people's attention to, don't need anything to interfere with the look), and a simple black clutch purse, with maybe a hint of gold sparkle in it (same with the shoes).

I can see it all in my mind's eye and you look 'dangerous', enjoy your party.

Turquoise. It looks good on everyone from very pale skin to very dark and it is also a very classy color. Wear turquoise jewelry.
Another option is red. (I'm agreeing with the person below). A chunky red belt right below the bust line with gold jewelry and (agreeing again) red heels. Good luck!

A beautiful, yet simple silver or gold necklace of some sort....and instead of black shoes..go with gold or silver, strappy high heeled sandals. You'll look fantastic.
