Probably not unlucky. Having something fall on you is unlucky.

One of the origins is supposed to come from times when ladders were used as improvised Gallows for executing wrong doers. Tie a rope to the top, make victim climb ladder, noose around the neck. Then turn over the ladder. Also where the phrase being "Turned Over" comes from

This is just common sense, do you walk under a ladder when there is someone up it with a can of paint? No because he could fall or the paint could. Now that would be unlucky!

Personally I don't believe in superstitions. I deliberately walk under ladders just to prove to myself I'm not superstitious unless I see something hanging off the ladder. Then of course I will walk around it.

YOU ARE ALL WRONG

The ladder superstition originates from Christian beliefs that anything triangular shaped represented the Holy Trinity (Father-Son-Holy Ghost).

A ladder leaning against a building forms a triangle. By walking through it, you are in effect defying the Holy Trinity. So this superstition only applies to Christians.

It is if the person up it is holding a tin of paint and it drops on your head, seriously I aren't sure why people refuse to walk under ladders, maybe its just another old wives tale that became mass hysteria like a lot of the old wives tales have, but I am as bad as it is one thing I just won't do.

I believe it began in ancient egypt where it was believed that the dead ascended to the afterlife on a stairway or ladder so the space under ladders was considered sacred

not unlucky at all - it is quite rational - if you see someone on the top of the ladder, painting or such then don't walk under it

If no one at top of ladder why not walk under it
