This one has obviously provoked strong reactions, but I do think the maths is a bit dodgy. According to the US Department of Veterans Affairs, some 2,709,965 US troops served in Vietnam. DVA figures for total casualties in Vietnam (confirmed up to 1983 and including those definitely confirmed as Missing In Action) are (in round figures) some 58,000 fatal and some 303,000 non-fatal casualties. Of the 58,000+ deaths, some 47,000 were due to enemy action and 11,000 due to other causes (accidents, natural causes, etc).

I have seen various figures bandied about for suicides amongst Vietnam veterans, ranging from the 9,000 already mentioned, through 50,000 (a commonly-quoted figure) and up to 150,000! Irrespective of the nubmers (although I believe the 9,000 is much the most likely figure), two points to remember are:

a. Not all suicides amongst Vietnam veterans are directly attributable to service in Vietnam. In fact, the further we get from the end of the Vietnam War, the harder it is to attribute them to war service. As I understand it, one of the main causes of suicides amongst Vietnam veterans has been stress rerlated to their spouse.

b. The time-period is very important. It's now 31 years since the Vietnam War ended. Suicides are therefore be spread over a period of decades, and their individual and collective importance, relative to the total of 2.7 million troops who served in Vietnam, must be viewed in this context.

For all that's said about Vietnam veterans, my understanding has always been that the majority of the 2.7 million who served and returned have led relatively normal lives. I think US men, and particularly those with military service behind them, are probably more robust than they're being given credit for.

So you think more than 50,000 young men committed suicide after serving in Vietnam. You must think this because that is how many died in Vietnam. I don't think North Korea has the balls to start a fight with the UN much less the US.

Where are you getting your information from? I'm sure that many soldiers committed suicide after Viet Nam, but not more than 58,209. It's a sad fact of life that some soldiers, understandably, cannot cope with what war requires them to do. So they end their own lives. Will the number of suicides equal or exceed the number of combat deaths? I doubt it.

the actual number of suicides by nam vets is estimated at about 9,000; the amount of war casualties were +50000; not very good math there, eh?
