Because there are crazies out there who do harm to them on Halloween - doesn't make sense, but that's why I labeled them crazies.

My black cat is an indoor cat so he is never out. I am not sure about the warnings about keeping black cat inside over Halloween are based on factual evidence that black cats are in any particular danger on Halloween night specifically other than becoming frightened by the young children going from door to door and the older kids yelling and throwing eggs. I think it is best to keep cats indoors all of the time. If the warnings about Halloween are true then they are true for every night. There is always the possibility there is some idiot who might harm a cat on the look-out for a loose cat - any time.

it's just an old wise tale that black cats will bring bad luck. You would be better off keeping it in the house. If the wrong person gets a hold of it you might end up with a dead cat. The same goes for Friday the 13th's

It is not unusual that sick and inhumane people do horrible things to black cats on and around halloween. I work at an animal hospital, and at this time of year we see an abnormal number of black cats that have been found mutilated, skinned, burned, tortured, shot with pellet guns, painted, eyes poked out, beaten, etc. Most rescues stop adopting out black cats at the beginning of October due to fears of pseudo-satanic rituals involving black cats. Needless to say, indoors is the safest place for any cat at any time of year, but around Halloween, stupid people seem to get extra-stupid in this regard.

I don't know about the saying you read, but common sense tells me that keeping your black cat in on Halloween is probably to keep it safe from superstitious people that might do harm to it.

it is a good idea to keep any animal inside on halloween due to there are alot of animal violence cults that believe in sacrificing animals on halloween. it is mostly for the animals safety. also halloween is a holiday of pranks and people will kidnap people's pet and leave them out in the middle of nowhere.

There are a lot of sick individuals who have deep-seeded superstitions. One should keep pets in on all celebrated holidays, like Halloween and the Fourth of July, because on holidays like these people get drunk and often participate in dangerous activities and there have been a number of cases of animal abuse.

Yeah, psycho freaks might slaughter a black cat anyday, but more so on holidays, and especially halloween.
