If Republicans supported Gay Rights, would they be the perfect party?

Foley isn't the only closeted gay man in politics to come out recently (remember McGreevey)-- but because he is a republican (and republicans are supposedly anti gay) he is getting a lot of flack from libs. Would things be different if Foley was a democrat?

I don't think hitting on a 16 year old makes you a pedophile. Call me progressive, but most gay 16 year old boys can take care of themselves, don't you think?

Do you think Debrah LaFavre is a pedophile? Or do you just wish she was your teacher?

This question goes to show how stupid you repubs are being a pedophile is not the same as being gay. Being gay is not against the law being a pedophile is. You can be and adult male and molest a young girl and that makes you a pedophile not gay.

A) if republicans supported gay rights they would most definitely not be the perfect party--they have so much wrong with them that I won't even try to list the items here.

B) if Foley were a Democrat, I doubt things would be much different although Republicans would be getting on line to join a lynching party just now. The problem is not that he is/is not gay, the problem is that he was hitting on a 16 year old and other pages of the same age bracket. In most places that's under age and constitutes a crime. Also, you have to realize that pages often are away from their families and homes and regular schools--that makes them more vulnerable and congressmen are in a position to exploit those vulnerabilities--usually having money, some immunities, ability to move more freely and access to pages.

C) The scandal is deeper than just one congressman and that 's adding fuel to the fire here. Apparently, people who are supposed to be watching out for this kind of behavior were tipped off about it sometime ago and did nothing. That's part of this outrage--it sort of resembles various Catholic Bishops who looked the other way while their priests abused altar boys and little girls. They became active co-conspirators when they knew this was going on and did nothing about it, when they were in the position to and were obligated to act.

D) The only thing I can say that would be somewhat in defense of the whole affair, is that from what I read so far, the comments Foley made were less than "lurid" as they have been described and the page may have been leading him on and not so innocent himself. As for the leadership they are saying that nothing explicit was brought to their attention, just that the communications were overly friendly, but nothing more. So, it is perhaps possible to give the benefit of the doubt to Foley (only a little bit) that he had a willing participant and to the Leadership (perhaps a lot) that they had no inkling that the problem was as bad as its turning out.

Republicans are not anti gay rights. We support equal rights for all. All gays have a right to a fair trial, right to start a business, right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of property. What are you referring to? They can go where any other citizen can go.

What "Gay Rights" people want is special laws just for gays. They want gay marriage, but in a democratic society like ours, it must be passed by the legislature. Since 80% of Americans are against gay marriage, that is not going to happen. "Gay rights" also include harsher sentences for gay bashing. All this is is treating gays like more important people. Murder is murder. It is not a worse crime because the person was gay, black, etc.

As for the democrats, politics takes over at this point. Since they have nothing positive to offer, they slander Foley. This is typical of both parties. Focus on ideas and direction, not spats about this and that.
