For families: The beaches (there are over 600 miles of coastline in Texas), camping (Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Big Bend National Park, South Padre Island, or the Rio Grand river), and yes, Six Flags over Texas (Who could forget?). For a real kick, visit the Dallas Zoo, where you can see the tallest statue in the state of Texas: a giraffe with its tongue sticking out.

For food: Take a swing to Amarillo, where if you eat a four-pound steak at the Big Texan Steak Ranch Restaurant in under one hour, you get it for FREE.

For events: There's tons of events throughout the year, and a lot of them are happening right now in October! There's Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg, The Texas Rose Festival in Tyler, and one of the largest Halloween celebrations in the country in Austin called "Halloween in Sixth Street"

For recreation: There are over 900+ golf courses in Texas, along with some Texas-sized flea markets in Canton and Post, TX. Canton's is called First Monday Trade Days and features more than 6,000 dealers over 350 acres of land selling everything from antiques to animals!

For romantic couples: Galveston Island, a very popular getaway just an hour from Houston. Of course, there's tons of beaches for your hearts content!

For the cultured at heart: The Alamo in San Antonio, an actual Blarney Stone in Shamrock, TX, and then you also have two International Museums of Art in both McAllen and El Paso. If you're willing to cross the border, there's also Matamoros, Mexico, right across the border from Brownsville, which is an excellent preview of the Mexican culture.

Austin and San Antonio are two fabulous cities in Texas. Austin offers a wide variety of restaurants, bars and establishments offering live music. The city of Austin is quite eclectic and full of energy. San Antonio offers old world charm with the Alamo, River Walk and El Mercado (The Market). Both cities are great for tourists!

I was born and raised in San Antonio so here are a bunch of things there....(not sure about other areas!)

THE ALAMO!!!

Hemisfair tower/arena

Riverwalk (my husband proposed to me there! =D)

El Mercado (the Market)

General/Other areas:

Six Flags Parks

Schlitterbahn

The best thing (what I do when going to travel) is actually call the state tourism board or get online and request brochures/catalogs etc....usually the stuff is right on, and sometimes fun, good places to visit can't afford advertising so make sure to listen to locals!!

The most fun I ever had in Texas was LEAVING. The state sucks, hot and humid with more creepy crawly critters than Africa and the people are mostly stupid and arrogant.
