So I take it that when our American cousins use this word it is a form of insult... yes/no?

Traditionally a dude (pronounced 'düd' (American), or 'dyüd' (British)) is a dandy; a man who dresses flashily. But in recent years, the term has taken on a colloquial meaning at variance with that: it now means a male friend, comrade, or associate. Formerly, the word was associated with Western movies. The new usage entered the mainstream from California surfer slang from at least 1968,referenced in the movie 'Easy Rider', and today is strongly associated with Generation X

so its a 'fop' from the days when men wore tights and carried lacy hankies covered in snuff to hide the stench of their surroundings when inhaled.....

It was also an insulting nickname used in hunting for an inexperienced rider or guest..

It was later used by american ranchers

and now refers to anyone or any stupid action. (not sure when the latter came into use... but if you says so...)

It means a male friend, mate, comrade, or associate. It can also be used as an informal form of address when the speaker does not know, or does not wish to use, the name of the person that he or she is speaking to.

dude = (!!) it's kind of like an exclamation...as in "dude, did you see that!?" or "dude, that was so wrong..." or "dude, that was the best burrito i've had in a long time!" it applies to both males and females, but if you want to fem it up, you can use "dudella"
