Yes, it still can happen. As a mater of fact, many doctors avoid tonsil removal procedure if at all possible because tonsils "protect" the rest of your respiratory system from infection. Now that they are gone, your infection might be even worse. Sorry.

Yes they can. A sore throat can be caused by many things like sinus drainage for example. Strep can still be caught without your tonsils, however your chances are reduced. The tonsils are a very good growth area for the strep bacteria. But not a necessary one.

A good test for strep is to look down the person's throat in good lighting and check for white speckles. Strep is very serious, and can cause permanent brain damage if not treated, so be careful, and see a doctor if worried.
