It's when you breath too fast and can't get all of the air out of your lungs before you try taking another breath in so you don't get enough fresh oxygen. It's purely a mental thing - when you pass out, your breathing goes back to normal. That's also why they get you to breathe into a paper bag, if you can breathe out enough to fill up the bag, you should soon stop hyperventillating. That and breathing along with someone else.

YES!

Over breathing or hyperventilating causes a reduction in the amount of carbon dioxide in the blood. This may lead to numbness and tingling around the mouth and/or muscle spasm in the hands and feet. It can cause dizziness and fainting.

Although there is no easy way to prevent or predict an attack, an episode can often be shortened or aborted by breathing slowly, in and out of a paper bag for a few minutes (covering your nose and mouth), thus restoring carbon dioxide levels to normal.

Hyperventilation is one of a number of physical symptoms that can occur in association with a feeling of panic or anxiety. The symptom is usually triggered by a sudden change in emotion linked to a particular situation or fear.

When some people get nervous they hyperventilate. That means that the breath frecuency is higher than needed causing low CO2 in the blood. This causes the blood pH to get higher and the result is from dizziness to unconciousness. You should control breath when panic.

Hyperventilating is a breathing faster or deeper than necessary. And yes stress or anxiety is a common cause of hyperventilation. I recommend that you make an appointment to see your doctor if this continues, because it can cause dizziness, headache, chest pain, and sometimes fainting. Good Luck!
