Your Dr will prescribe iron supplements, probably a form of iron called Ferrous sulfate which many people's bodies cannot assimilate because it is made from earth elements (rocks and dirt basically) and not from food, so your body may not know what to do with it other then become constipated. Try this iron supplement (see 'source'), it is easily absorbed and utilized, when I used to work for a midwife, she recommended this with great success. Also remember taking vitamin C at the same time as Iron helps absorption. Drinking coffee or milk on the other hand can hinder absorbtion.

You will often be given iron supplements, but a word of warning, these can make you constipated which in turn can aggravate piles, a solution to this would be to make sure you drink plenty of orange juice, which in turn will help the iron to absorb quicker. Also avoid caffeine as this inhibits the absorbtion of iron into your body. If your iron count is very low you may need a blood transfusion but your doctor will take regular tests to monitor your iron levels.

i had anaemia in my first pregnancy and was prescribed iron tablets and lactulose. my midwife would take a blood sample every time i visited her to keep a check on it and when i was in labour, i had an extra midwife there incase i bled too much after delivery, which i did, and had to have a blood transfusion. im now pregnant with my second due next month and docs are keeping an eye on me again, my blood count is not as low as it was but they still put me on iron tablets and still check blood every visit.
every midwife is different, maybe they wont "stab" you with needles every time you see her like they did with me, it depends on how low your blood count is. i was told that it should be something like between 9 and 12 (i dont know if thats completely true)

You have to take iron supplements and they will regularly test your blood to check the amount of iron in it. It's just a prick on the finger at each visit - nothing to worry about.
