If Church's has a policy against facial hair for employees, it should have been brought to your son's attention at the time he asked for the application. Generally, a hiring manager will explain the policy up-front and ask whether the applicant understands and will comply if hired.

I can understand the concern of the manager - hair in food - and the impact it would have on the business. That's why most fast food employees wear paper hats. But to say flat out "we're not hiring" while two posters are in the windows is outrageous. You did the right thing.

I hope you got the name and title of the person you talked to at "corporate". If he has not already attempted to apply, have him go back, with the goatie, to see if "something will be done". If not, file a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (look in the phone book, or "google" them)

In 1972 I was the victim of housing discrimination. I called and was told the place was still available. When I went to see it I was told that no place was for rent there. I went home and called again and was told the place was still available. I cried about it then went into action. I went to my local NAACP and a civil rights complaint was filed with the federal government. I went to the local district attorneys office and filed a complaint. This landlord was fined $25000 by the feds and was prosecuted by the DA office who slapped an additional fine of $10000 and was forced to comply with fair housing laws. The mere fact that your son was not given an application merely amounts to the same thing that happened to me. As much as we have supposedly evolved, it seems that things have remained the same. As far as the goatee, that is a conversation that is suppossed to happen at a job interview where their standards are explained and the applicant has the option to say no thank you or agrees to cut it off. So, yes you have every right in the world to file a complaint.

Yes I think you were right. the manager should have just given him the application. I do know of some eating places that will not give jobs to people with facial hair though because of a chance of it getting in to the food.
Even though I still think you did the right thing I mean they were advertising work. It would be at the interview stage that he should have said that.
Good luck to your son at finding a job

You did the right thing. You're right the manager was in the wrong...telling your son one thing and then telling you something different. Sounds like he did a little discriminating or something who knows.... but like you I'm sure it had nothing to do with a goatie beard
Good luck w/ coporate office

actually i believe that discriminating against someone for their beard is illegal unless they had an actuall reason. ie the hair from the beard could fall into the food.
