Hockey is a wonderful sport. The speed and pace of play are tremendous.
You of course have to involve physical play because that can sometimes change the course of a game but fighting is getting to be a little primitive. I think it chases people away from the game. I really dislike going to a game, especially a minor league game and there are people there who don't know a thing about hockey and are only there to see a fight. They need to go to a boxing match not a hockey game. If more people can see the game for what it really is than hockey would be a more popular sport. Look at the National Football League, you do not see fighting like you do in hockey and football is the most popular sport in America. We have to keep the 'Clean' physical play but get rid of the on ice boxing matches. By the way, a soccer player can't run 20+ mph like a skater can skate on ice.

It's better than watching the trap and all that clitchig and grabbing. Besides fighting has become a WWE joke--orchestrated between goons rather than spontaneous outbreaks.

As far as physical play, you still see hitting while open ice hitting was always a rare thing no matter what era as lazy players who were slow and couldn't skate just clutched an grabbed.

It's a far better game I see today than the boring '90s. As far as soccer on ice, go to the big rinks in Europe for that. All I know in soccer you see 0-0 and maybe 5 shots a game....the WORST hockey game now sees at least 50 shots on goal and a score of 3-2.

Although the Flyers/Senators "game" was entertaining in it's own way, and the fact that I got turned on to hockey in the early seventies, I think fighting should still be part of the game but not on a huge scale. I absolutely believe that the physical aspects belong in the game and the refs need to swallow the whistle 50% of the time. If you can recall the playoff wars in the mid eighties between Calgary and Edmonton then you know what kind of hockey should be played.

I love hockey, but am not a big fight fan. I think that if two guys want to fight, the officials should let them fight and allow play to continue! NO WHISTLE. The two fighters can keep fighting, giving the fight fans what THEY want, and the hockey fans can continue watching the two team playing four on four. Of course, once the two are finished fighting (one gets knocked out or they tire each other out), each player gets two minutes (or more) in the box. In addition, the penalty is served in full, regardless if a goal is scored.

I personally would rather see speed and skill in the game than a lot of fighting but fighting is necessary sometimes. It's worse without the fighting if there is some player continually get ran over and no one to protect him but other than that I don't miss it.

Fighting has a place in hockey. It stops things from getting stupid with high sticks and other dirty hockey. It keeps everyone honest.
I don't think it will ever go back to the "1976 Philadelphia Flyers", style as the game of hockey is evolving away from that.

with the new rules you will soon start to see more tough guys per team to protect the smaller more skilled players that are coming to the league in today's new NHL. with the new NHL the players are going to be much smaller. fighting hasn't been as big for the last 20 years cause even the big name super starts are big enough to fight their own battles but like i said with the new rules that allot of players that wouldn't make the NHL cause of being to small, know they will make it but after a few years teams and owners and GM will realize that they the little players will need to be protected from the other team goons. and Gary Bettman will be gone in the next 5 years and you will start to see the old hockey back and not as much rule changes to help the American to understand the game more. i they don't like it then don't watch it.

GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
