The State of Hawaii takes its name from the *island* of Hawaii, the largest of the islands in the chain. The others are Oahu, Maui, Kauaii, Molokai and Lanai. The myth-related explanation offered by another poster is probably how the *island* came to be called Hawaii.

There are also 2 more called Niihau and Kahoolawe. Niihau is privately owned, and not open to tourism. Kahoolawe is very small and is primarily now a wildlife preserve.

?? I never heard any of the above explanations for how Hawaii got its name, so I thought I'd double-check just to make sure that I wasn't imagining things.

One theory has it that the name comes from a combination of the words "Hawa" and "ii" and means a small or new homeland; "Hawa" meaning a traditional homeland and "ii" meaning small and raging. The other theory is that the name comes from the traditional discoverer of the islands, a fisherman named Hawaii Loa.
