Routers, often called gateways, are a way to both isolate and connect one segment of your network from another. In the home environment, they provide a way to separate your home network from the Internet, while at the same time providing a connection point. To your cable company or DSL provider, they make your internal network appear to be a single device, so you don't need to pay extra for additional computers connected to them.
Your modem is what you use to connect to the Internet... or a cable or satellite.. you need to have two connections to get to the internet and only need a router if you want to connect more than one computer in your home with one connection line.. to your ISP.

most router need a high speed Internet connection.
the modem gets you on line,
the router get more than one computer to communicate with each other. from Internet to files and folders even some programs.
so you only need a router with high speed Internet and more than one computer. and need is a relative term, want may fit in most cases.

I am using a vonage router, with 2phone ports... which means my hubby family in the states and me being in australia I get to make calls anywhere to the states/canada/puerto rico for just 24bux a mth. unlimited calls unlimited time... plus I have a second pc connected to the router, with a cable connection... so u see a router is not a luxury these days its a neccessity..LOL, invest in one u realize that your phone bill will be so far cheaper in the long run... *thumbs up vonage* I rate you a 10 on my scale
