We have a 2-wire gateway (from SBC-Yahoo) that plugs into our peer to peer Windows XP network. It has an IP number and works as a firewall. We all access the network (DSL) through it.

What do I have to do to set up someone so he can connect into our network from home via Remote Desktop?

You need to make sure Remote Desktop is turned on. You can do that by right clicking on My Computer and going to properties. Then click on remote. Then you will probably have to setup port forwarding on the router to forward traffic on port 3389 to whichever machine you want to connect to.
