My husband and I have been married for 26 years and we have one son 23. We own our house together. I find him a thoughtless lazy and selfish man. Before I worked he gave me no housekeeping and often I went without food. My mother sent me her old clothes. Now I earn a pittance I still have no housekeeping but my husband does pay a lot of the bills. I buy everyones birthday and xmas gifts. My clothes etc. The t.v. licence and the telephone bills and all the food on days off work.Altho' we take holidays together he is often out playing golf 1-2 times a week ,watching football live plus on t.v. all the time. When I am in bed he is watching porn. so I want to leave him. The best way is ?

I did this myself, it cost about £30.00 altogether. All you need to do is to ring your local court office, and ask them to send you a divorce pack. This is free of charge, you then fill it in, and get a solicitor to check and sign it - this is the £30.00 bit (maybe a bit more now).
As long as the Judge agrees with everything (mainly provision for the children - so you should be ok there), then it is all systems go.
The money comes when getting solicitors involved to split your worldly goods. We did this amicably so no cost there either.
It is a sad time though, so good luck.

As you don't have any children under18 to consider you could go for one of those cheap DIY divorces and advice for those can be found on the Internet or in books that can be got from your local library or bookstore.
If you both agree as to the financial aspects of your marriage, like assets you have jointly, debts etc and how this will be divide out (although more communally 50/50) this shouldn't be too much of a problem to get a divorce without involving further lawyers fees. However, if your situation is more complicated, then best seeking advice from a solicitor or Family Law Centre. There are guides to help you on the Internet and companies that can help with DIY divorce applications.
Lawyer's firms generally offer free advice on the first appointment and thereafter you can decide wither to go for a DIY divorce or appoint a solicitor to deal with your interests during the divorce process. The divorce will consist of court fees at the very least and in some cases you may be able to receive legal aid depending on your individual circumstances, but any good solicitor will advise you of your rights, fees, court costs etc.before hand.

Good luck

First open you own bank account and start to build up your own financial security, maybe even apply for credit cards, so you have credit in your name.

Make arrangements to stay with family or friends.

Tell him you want a divorce, leave to where you have arranged to stay, see a legal aid lawyer and start the process.

Make yourself happy.
