The blower will help circulate the air so it isn't 90 in the living room and 60 in other rooms. Don't bother with a stove if you don't get a blower.

If it is a wood stove look for a shield too. A blower will usually be mounted to a heat shield. What the heat shield does is reduce the required clearance by about half. That basically means it is a bit of protection for the wall behind the wood stove.

The blower helps to keep the surface of the stove cooler while spreading the heat through the room. Some modern stoves are made of steel and not cast iron. Steel stoves need to have the fire brick, cast iron doesn't need the brick. Steel stoves cannot take the heat like the cast iron ones, so many steel stoves will have a blower.

The blower will help circulate the air over the sides of the stove and draw-off more heat. Despite the first answer, be careful of deciding if to get one. A few things to consider:

- the fans do not circulate the hot air into other rooms very well (ceiling fans work better),
- when running, the room will get hot very fast, if you are in a warm climate, it will be very uncomfortable,
- if you get a fan, get a demonstration of how loud it is -- some of them are really loud and annoying.

In my experience, the fan is a good option if you wish to use the stove for primary heating, need to warm a large area quickly or are in a cold climate (I have family in northern Ontario and the fan is a must).

I am in southern Ontario (much warmer winter here) and don't use the stove for primary heating so would not bother to have a fan. On my gas furnace, I can select to run the furnace blower without heat. That works really well to distribute the heat throughout the house, from the wood stove in the living room.

No matter what you do, make sure your installation is inspected and talk to your insurance company before buying the stove.

Once it is in -- you will love it!

The blower blows the heat to get it into other rooms or the other side of the room it's in. It is for distribution of heat in your home. Keeps your home more comfortable.

Forget the blower. Install a cieling fan. It will do the same job and look better. And it will be helpful in the summer blowing around the cooler air.
