I feel that is a much better choice. The big box stores are cheaper, I guess, but it is so easy to get taken with gems, that I would put my trust in a family owned jewelery store. That is exactly what my Wife and I did 17 years ago. We had a couple of minnor problems and it was handled promptly. Just lately, my Wife took the set back to be cleaned, and we dealt with the same people that sold it to us. I liked that. By the way, the cleaning is always been free, including minnor adjustments. I feel we made a good choice.

You know, I'm not much of an activist, but when it comes to buying engagement rings I feel strongly about 2 things:

1) Don't start your marriage burried in debt - money is the most fought about things in marriages, don't make it any harder than needs be.

2) See if you can get a conflict-free diamond.

never buy a ring! Buy the diamond. If you find a high quality stone somewhere for a good price buy it. Then once you get the stone appraised, take it to a jewler and have them set the stone in the ring. Already put together rings are usually lesser quality for a higher price

If you are bringing your future wife, start all the mall jewelry stores. If not, see what is at the mall, what is on line and you can even check out pawn shops. It all depends on your budget and what you are looking for. Myself, I would go to the major mall jewelers and compare and never to a small jeweler, they can really rip you off.

Yes, unless Mom & Pop are a tag team at scamming, which they're usually not.
Anyway, high fashion jewlery stores tend to run their jewlery at very high rices. A Mom & Pop jeweler can be more friendly, considerate, and helpful.

Where you get the ring is not as imprtant as what it means. I got my wedding ring at wal-mart. Im not a picky girl, besides it is rude of her to ask where it came from, the ring is supposed to be a surprise in the first place. Just go where you can afford to buy it and still eat too!

I just quit working, and I worked for a "mom and pop" jewelery store. Their prices might be higher than big lot stores (like a Costco, for example), but the service and guarantee is usually better. Just check their history(any complaints registered, and how long have they been in business).
