"if there is a problem with the sound of my electric guitar, would that usually be a pick up problem or an amp problem? I have never had the pick ups cleaned or anything other than the regular cleaning i do myself. I have noticed the sound has changed a little and the guitar does not sound quite as cool."

I strongly suggest you ask Slash from guns n roses. I think he could help you out.

Don't discount your plug cord that goes from guitar to amp. If it's well used, it could be getting frayed at its connection to either of the male components. Try a new patch cord and see if the problem is there.

I would think normal cleaning of your pickups is sufficient. The blame could easily be placed on the amplifier or guitar cord. Sometimes the volume control on your guitar can filter out the input/output.

Very easy question. Take your Guitar to the local music store and plug in to other amps. If it sounds good there, it's your amp.
If not, could be the guitar. The guys at the music store should be able to help after hearing it for themselves.
