The primary focus is to understand the origin of life. How animals and plants have evolved from inanimate molecules into living beings. What is it that characterises a "live" molecule from an "un-live" molecule. The study of living things is only one means out of many toward acquiring that understanding.

It's a fascinating study, and there are many, many, many books and Internet articles which will be of interest to us at all levels -- layman, student and professional.

Do embark on this study, even a little every day, and you'll find yourself getting really absorbed into the subject.

One good source from wikipedia is given below. Follow the links to other sources.

Good luck.

The focus of studying biology is for people to learn more about the living things in their environment. So I'd say that your thinking was correct.

"bio" (Greek) means "life". "-logy" means "knowledge of" or "study of". So there you have it.
