Why is do we live in a society that thinks that being thin and pretty is very important?

This can be realted back to Ugly Betty on ABC. She is not ugly in real life. The message of the show is that looks ar not everything, it is how you carry yourself that matters.

Being physically fit has been a part of the human mating ritual for eons.Not everyone feels exactly that way.A group of anthropologists took groups of people from Europe,South America,Africa and the USA.What they found when showing them groups of pictures was the same for all of them.Symmetry was attractive.
Everyone has an idea of what a good mate looks like.
Conversely.Makeup,clothing and supplement manufacturers will try to engrain an image into your head.THIS IS HOW YOU SHOULD LOOK.These are the two most common reasons.I find beauty in the individual.The initial attraction may be aesthetic,but it's the woman that counts the most.I wouldn't leave my girlfriend if she gained 200 lbs.

Society is based on stereo type and what most people call the in crowd. However if you look around you'll see that the plus size is becoming a dominant force in this closed minded world.

Everywhere you look someone is advertising for plus sizes. Department Stores and Clothing designers are coming into the 21st century with new seasonal lines of plus sized attire for both men and women. (Big and Tall) attire for men

I feel the same way. I'm not fat but I'm not stick thin. If people want to make fun of me because of that then go right ahead. I really like the fact that some celebrities are promoting this but shame on the ones that don't.

Fact from fiction, truth from diction. In every arena thin is alway more in that fat. the lines are better, the proportion, everything. If you had the chance to be in group 'A' or group 'B', which would you chose?

1st i dont think thin and pretty go together. all the thin ppl u see in mag look like greyhounds. second what society thinks is just the opinions of thouse ppl that cant think for themselves so i would ignore it and 3rd evry one has their own idea of pretty so be urself there is some 1 outhtere who will like u

With the obesity problem these days, we are actually pulling away from that image, and are beginning to glorify fat, or at least moderately chubby. Heck, we don't have a choice, do we? Look at the kids eat fast food, buffets, donuts, and ding-dings!

Look around you! Our media is creating a false reality as to what a women "should" look like. Its one thing to be thin and athlethic, but to be gaunt and sick looking is not acceptable. No matter what, thin and pretty is what will always be socially accepted, but we as a society should learn not to rely on celebs and models to compare ourselves.

Because people are like sheep and they just follow what "somebody says" they should. So then everyone starts to think thats how they should be. Someone's perception of being pretty is different from everyone elses....if people could just learn to think for themselves they would be much happier

If people didnt appreciate being thin then it wouldn't be the norm. Overweight people are looked down upon and teased because they are not the little Barbies that we were taught are beatuful. If people liked healthy women then skinny women would try and get healthier and that would become the norm.

Have you ever sat next to a person on an airplane that is so heavy they are constantly sweating and breathing heavy because their weight was so taxing on their existence?...not attractive.
