a text book blood pressure is around 120/70 and you would class an high blood pressure as over 140/90. however not everyone will be the same. some people might have a naturally high blood pressure and have no effects of this. peoples blood pressures can be affected by many factors, ie diet, weight, excercise level, smoking, age. yor mums gp should have started her on some medication to help bring this down, they will keep a close eye o her blood pressure. however dont expect the medication to bring it down instantly it needs time to get into her system properly. your mum also needs to look at her general health and see if there is anything she can change to help lower her blood pressure. your gp or pracice nurse will advise her what she can do. if you want more informaion contact your doctor or you can contact the british heart foundation. i have included some sites for you to look at. some of the effects are that it can cause strokes and heart attacks. the main thing to remember is your mum is getting help from her gp so she is getting help to prevent these problems.

My mum once had blood pressure this high and she was given several BP tablets and water tablets and had to keep going for very regular BP check. It took quite a while but eventually it was brought under control. High BP can be dangerous because it can cause heart attacks and strokes but her DR will be doing lots of blood tests to find out if there is an underlying cause for this high BP ie kidneys or liver etc or whether there is no paticular reason. Anyway I wouldn't worry too much because the main thing is that they have found it out and will now be monitoring her and treating her .Reading up on BP might not be the thing to do even though you might think you want to know about it because you can think your mum has or is going to have loads of problems and will only worry you more. Trust in your Dr.

If your blood pressure gets too high you can have a heart attack or a stroke. I think there is a link with high cholesterol. You should encourage your mum to take up a healthy low fat diet and avoid stress. Be careful about looking up too much stuff on the Internet as some symptoms can be present in many ailments

High blood pressure can lead to heart attacks and strokes, so it is important that your mum gets her blood pressure taken regularly, and is put on some medication to reduce it.
A normal blood pressure reading is 120 over 70. You don't say what the lower reading is.

Your GP and the British Heart Foundation can give you lots of info. Cutting her stress levels, weight, and fat/salt intake will all have an impact. Assume she has been put on immediate medication as is at greater risk of having a stroke or heart attack. Should be several websites on the subject...

220 over what?
That is high, so do a web search on high blood pressure and hypertension. Has she been placed on medication to lower it?

Oh dear, that is very high, has your doctor not advised her what to do , if not sorted out it could lead to a stroke or heart attack, but double check with NHS direct or get the doctor out to see her if your worried, i hope everything goes well for you and your mum.

well like the rest said you should see a Doctor about that it is dangerously high and should be washed by a profession but if you are seeing one i am sure they will tell you that you are over stressed, you can get stress out by starting new classes i.e. caratey that get allot of stress out as well as getting stress out you would need to watch her diet i.e. no salts or reduce salts in her diet.
