The side effects of the tablets are usually nausea, vomiting, loose stools and sleeping problems although that isn't the case for everyone. Anything like wheezing, problems breathing, etc should be seen as an allergic reaction and he should get to the hospital if that happens. I have heard that most tablets do have their side effects and probably Avloclor is the best one to go for.
I really doubt whether you'll get them on insurance since it's for 'recreational' use rather than a case of him being sick but you can always inquire. I don't know how much they will cost since I don't know where you live but in the UK Avloclor costs about 10p per tablet.

side affects depend on the type of medication he is going to be taken,,, the most common pill given is doxycicline ( not sure if that is spelled right sorry), the most common side affects of this pill is you will be photosensitive,, in other words you will burn easily,, also nausea, and loose stool can occur,,, this pill usually is not that expensive,, and I'm not sure if insurance covers meds for vacations,, but they might.

You don't really need that for Thailand. I spent 3 months there a couple of years ago without any problem.
