What kind of tree is it? Many trees have "peeling" bark and it's completely natural. Birch trees are a good example of this. If this is a natural trait of your tree, peeling the bark off of it will harm the tree. Animals will also eat the bark off of natural peeling trees which also causes harm from them tearing the bark off before it's ready to fall off on it's own. Peeling bark is considered to be "added interest" in trees and people plant them for that reason. If you really think it may be an insect problem, you may need to spray your tree. You may want to have this professionally done if your tree is medium to large size. The chemicals are harmful and I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself.

So, this tree doesn't loose it's bark because some do when they get older. If it's bugs a natural way to spray them is with old fashioned octagon soap melted in warm water then add some mouthwash and vinegar. You will have to use a bottle on the end of your hose or one of those sprayer things and added water. good luck.

If its borers causing the problem, get some carbaryl and spray the affected areas and into the holes. Later spray with a fungicide all over the trunk of the tree.
