One pound is generally worth two and a half dinar, one dinar being about 40p

I went to Tunisia last month. Like you I was worried about the money thing, but I shouldn't have been. The hotel we were in changed money and i think most places do. The exchange rate was about 1 british pound to 2.4 tunisian dinar, but for ease we just halved whatever price we were told to convert to british.
I took travellers cheques and the american express ones only have to be signed in front of the cashier. You don't need your passport. My hubby just took pounds and had no problem changing them either. In fact most traders will quite happily take pounds instead of dinars and you often get a better price in pounds.
Remember to ask whether the price you are being told is a fixed price or whether it is negotiable. There is still a little room to negotiate a fixed price down, though. If it's a haggling situation, it's done a bit differently to other countries. They will get a piece of paper and write down their price. It will be ridiculous. Then you write your price. Go for about a quarter of what he's put. This goes on for ages until you reach a price you're both happy with. It's great fun!
Also, keep some small change on you at all times, cos you have to tip most people for most things.
And most important, HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY! Money permitting, I'd be back out there like a shot!

Nowadays, most mobile phones have them , and you can just put the currency in, and you will have it. For example, Euros to American Dollar and the currency is for example 4.5869 right?? then you type 4.5869 into the currency and you would get it. If you need to find out the currency go to www.yahoo.com.au and then click on currency converter and voila, you have it Althought i DO NOT think that there calculators that do that with letters.

Any travel accessoryshop sells converters that you set
Irrespective of where you are going they are universal.
Your mobile probably has a converter hidden in the calculator menu.
And some watches have them too.
The pound shops also sell euro converters. you just pre-set the amount and bingo.
Generally though ther is a mental figure that roughly converts for knockabout calculations
What ever you decide - do have fun and let us know how you got on

there probably wont be a physical calculator. But if you go to www.xe.com you can find a currency converter that is updated every 10 minutes or so. If you find how much money you can get for 1 pound you multiply your amount by this number and you get your overall amount in tunesian money.

As of now 1GBP = 2.50 TND (tunesian Dinars) so if you times the english money by 2.5 you get you tunesian money.

to do it quickly in your head you can double you money and then add half of it

you cannot get tunisian money in britain because it is a "closed" currency. Their currency is the dinar and one dinar is worth about 90p. When you leave tunisia, you are not allowed to take their money out of the country, and they will search you to make sure that you don' have any.

Went there a few years back. Sure their money was something like 2 Tunisan to 1 Pound so no converter needed!
P.S Don't have a henna tattoo (it burns your skin) and take some Imodium...

They don't allow their currency out of the country, you can buy it out there from illegal money changers, take dollars they like them.
My parents went there with my auntie and uncle about ten years ago. They said the people were more pushy and not as honest as the Turks. Similar people but Turkey was far more pleasant.
