Which gold rush? There was a California Gold Rush, an Alaska Gold Rush, and several other gold rushes.
People from the east frequently SAILED -- it was a very long and a dangerous journey, but the Panama Canal had not yet been built so they had the choice of sailing around the horn of Africa, and crossing the ocean by heading east, or by sailing to the bottom of the continent, and coming up the other side.
Many of the gold rushers walked across the country to the site of the rush, joined wagon trains or rode horseback. Walking isn't as silly as it might seem at first, because it's possible to cross the continent on foot in under a year.
The lure of gold was very powerful, but very few made any money in the gold fields. The ones who brought out the most profit were the ones who provided services -- restaurants, hotel or bunk house proprietors, grocers, barbers and washerwomen, etc.

Which gold rush?
Sutter's Mill area of California? A big one that made everyone go down to Australia? Or another BIG one that made everyone head up to Alaska? There were quite a few all over the world in the 1800s. Most questions are about the Sutter's Mill, California one. Gold was discovered in 1848. Word got back to the eastern US and in 1849 everyone who wanted to prospect headed west. This is where the San Francisco NFL team gets its name: the "49ers"--as in "1849".

Started in 1849. I have an episode of Challenge of the Superfriends where the Legion of Doom go back in time one week before the gold rush so they can steal all the gold. The Justice League stopped them. Man, if I had a time machine like that, I'd go back when the Justice League were kids and kill them so they couldn't stop my future plans. Lex Luthor isn't a very good leader.

The Gold Rush happened in 1849. (Most participants got the nickname of " '49ers ".) They got to California and all points west by means of wagon train, horseback, or (if you were really poor) by foot.

Hope this helps!

The Gold Rush begins in 1848 and ends around 1856

They took covered wagons across the land, and they took ships from the east all the way around south america (before panama canal)
