I like the story of Odin hanging on the tree in Norse mythology, and also the story of Narcissus in Greek mythology. For fairy tales, I enjoy Hans Christian Anderson's "The Little Match Girl" and Oscar Wilde's "The Selfish Giant".

The one that tells of Earth being created as a penal colony eons ago. That's why there are no ancient world histories of the different populations here. Those of us who demonstrated whatever criminal or deviant behavior on our home planets were banished here for lifetimes ("you must be born again") as punishment. What keeps us all on lock down is gravity and that radiation belt that's only around this very small planet understandably located on the far side of the Milkyway galaxy. No visitors are allowed except for the crew hired to occasionally check on us to make sure the matrix is in tact and that no one wakes up or remembers what's happened, all low paid misfits who sometimes take advantage of humans for their own sexual gratification because they can.
