Strictly speaking it was not "about" the First World War, but took place during it and it showed how it impacted a family, as three sons from one family all fought there.

Brilliant film, but not a "war movie" as such.

Gary Cooper as Sergeant Alvin C. York in Howard Hawks' 1941 Sergeant York is a great movie despite its old age. The people who made it could still remember the era.

Sgt. York and then All quiet on the western front. Not the remake, the original. The Lost battalion is also a very good movie.
