Contact your local fire department, police department, hospital and county human services department. They should be able to help you find one. You may also want to try www.freecycle.com in your area. Just keep in mind that a used carseat should never be more than 5 years old, this is to ensure that it meets the most current safety standards. Also, a used car seat should have never been in an auto accident before. Good luck!

Where do you live? Because when I had my son, the hospital gave me a car seat. It was brand name (Graco, I believe) and was pretty nice. They gave it to me even though I had one of my own with me. DON'T buy a used car seat. You'd never know if it had been in an accident or if it's up to safety standards. A car seat is one of those things you don't really go cheap on. But also call your local health office, they'll know where to point you. Congrats on the baby!

Check the hospital where your baby was born.
Our hospital here has a policy that no child goes home without a carseat. They will actually provide one if the parents don't have one. Granted it won't be name brand, or any of the other bells & whistles other car seats may have - but safety for your child is high priority!

Contact your local police department, many departments now have a car seat installation expert on staff, and this person should have any info. you may need on where to get a free or low-cost baby seat.. Or call the WIC office to see if they can tell you where to go. Even the nurses on the maternity ward of your local hospital should have knowledge of where you can get a car seat.

If you have medica insurance you can get a free converible car seat. I nurse told me that they send you a voucher and you go get it at a srore. I'm sure other insurances have the same thing. i would call you medical insurace company and ask them about a free car seat. I know for sure medica does.

Check with your hospital. I know that my hospital has a program that they lend out car seats for free until you can either afford your own or the child outgrows it. I would think that most if not all hospitals would have a similar program.

some insurances will give you like a $50 gift certificate for a carseat so contact your insurance company... otherwise get a hold of the county... usually social services can help you out and some hospitals will also give away carseats.
