Books are always great. Board books for now or story books for later on. Teething toys will be a great gift by then. Either the kind that you put in the fridge to get cold or just the kind they chew on. Balls are cool too. It won't be long after Christmas that your baby will be thinking about crawling and balls are a good toy to help that along. I'm thinking stuffed toy type balls. Stacking/nesting toys are great also. :)

a jumper would be a good gift. he might not use it until hes 5 or 6 months but once they start jumping in it they love it!
make sure it is the kind that hangs from the door frame. I bought my second son the jumperoo (it stands on the floor on all fours) he hated it. it just didn't get height off the floor and he couldn't swing back and forth.hope this helps.p.s. extra clothes also help at that age they start solids and mess their clothes.

a 5 month old would be so fun to shop for!
weather it's cute outfits or toys. if you go to target.com or walmart.com they have the ages seprated for toys so you can see what kind of toys a 5 month old would play with.
Also like gymboree old navy and baby gap have super cute outfits for that age. They'll be 6-12mo but he'll grow into it shortly if he's not already in 6mo once he's 5 months.

My 3 year old nephew loves musical toys. He also loves Tomas the Train. They have a lot of cute Tomas tracks and Trains at Toys R Us. Boys seem to love anything with wheels too. But it does depend on what he likes. Hope this helps!

I'm in the same boat..I was thinking about some things My daughter could use when she starts trying to walk but I'm not sure..You could get something like one of those play mats that converts so when he gets older he can still play with it, Maybe a walker?

Books are always nice, as you can start reading to him young and encourage his love of books. Goodnight Moon is a good one or anything by Karen Katz. Nothing with too many words, just simple concepts. And lots of bright pictures to hold his interest.

toys that make noise and come apart, like blocks or those doughnut things. You also want something that they can chew on since they will probably be teething. All the best.

Baby Einstein movies -- they have beautiful visuals & music. Don't put him too close to the TV though. His attention span will be short, but it was amazing for my grandkids - they still love them and they are preschool age.
