My Primary Care Physician has retired. He sent me a letter with a form to be filled out advising him where to send my medical records. Since I have not yet chosen a new PCP, I asked that the records be sent to me. I have been informed by the office that the records can only be sent to another doctor and not to me. Is this correct?
I would appreciate a reply.
Thank you
Carl Mondello

You have a right to all of your medical records, but the folder will have to be sent to another Dr. and your Dr. is responsible for getting them to a Dr. for your future care.
I bet you could call another Dr. that you know and ask them if you could have your records sent there until you find another PCP...They should have gave you plenty of time to find another PCP.... Good Luck

Under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), you can have copies of your records sent to you, another provider, or anyone else upon your written consent. However, most practices will charge people to obtain copies of records for themselves, or anyone other than another health care provider. The original records will not be provided, either.

I would recommend inquiring about how much it would cost for you just to receive a copy-that way you can have them available whenever you do decide on a new PCP.

Yes it is correct. You have the right to have access you your records but for matters of safekeeping the originals will only be passed on to another physician.

You can request a copy of your medical records, but they cannot give you the original chart/papers.

Hmmm.....I don't believe so. You have a right to see your medical records at anytime. Now, if you're allowed to have to original...maybe not. Actually, I don't think you can have the originals because they would need them.
