You can lay it down , but you need to let it stand again for several hours before plugging it back in.
A fridge can be moved on it's side, but you run the risk of some of the oil coming out of the compressor and running up the lines to places where it can cause a restriction. Damage can occur to the fridge and the fridge may stop cooling :-(

Many times there is just no other way to move your fridge other than on it's side. Appliance Repair Aid has some tips for you.

The #1 problem with a fridge on it's side is the oil comes out of the compressor and runs up the cooling lines. If at all possible lay the fridge down on the opposite side of where these tubes come out of the compressor. Oil can run up the return line and discharge line, oil in the process tube will not hurt the fridge or operation. The worst is having oil in the discharge line

Take all food out --you may wish to remove the inside shelves also. Protect the finish by laying a blanket down(pick-up bed)and sliding the ref in. If you do not dent it --- you will be in good shape. When you get it there -- just let it stand upright for a time to let the compressor oil drain down -- does"nt take that long -- 1/2 hour is plenty of time. The repairman will know you brought it in laid down also. There"s no big problem here at all. Have fun.

don't lay it down unless you have to. If you lay it down, the coolant will seek out the low spot and go there. If you have to lay it down, let it stand 24 hours before you turn it on.

It's a sealed unit and as long as it is not dropped or shook violently, it's okay to lay it down to carry safe and stable. When you get it upright and in place, the oil will again return to the crankcase and function normal

Haha I thought it was funny. But I don't think I would reccomend trying to tell this to someone off the top of your head because it could very easily get confusing.

Yes - it is bad to lay down a refrigerator to move it. The reason is that the freon will leak out of it.

You can lean it some but if you lay it on the side it can lose it's coolant. This is very expensive to repair/ replace so try to keep it upright. Rent a truck and dolly if you need to. it will be cheaper than recharging the coolant in it.
