IOW, if the U.S. experienced a national emergency such as a pandemic, military invasion, natural disaster, etc., would the setting
U.S. president have legal authority to remain in office and delay an election (or delay relinquishing pesidential powers to the president elect)?

Yes, sort of.
Section 1 Clause 1 of the constitution defines that the presidents term in office is limited to a "four year term".
The 22nd amendment to the constitution also limits the president to two elections or ten years in total.
Finally, Section 1 Clause 6 states that congress may define who will hold the presidents mantle should both the President and Vice-President be out of office. However, who replaces the president is defined in the Presidential Succession Act.
So, it's possible that if an election was not held or some other calamity occurred then a Presidents term could extend for up to two years if the Congress were to declare the former President as the Acting president.

No the 22nd amendment that was placed after FDR's 4 term presidency limits the president to only 2 consecutive terms. Below is a good link that states this

Depends on the situation. It would be tough to do, but under the right circumstances I believe Congress would just have to vote on it. This was done in WWII, so as you can see, it would have to be an extremely crucial emergency.
