You have better chances of getting into a car accident, a plane accident, or of being struck by lightning, than you have of winning a national lottery.

I think its more like a tax on peoples dreams, lets face it if you have a crap low paid job and a distinct lack of intelligence the lottery dangles the dreams of unimaginable wealth in front of you. Its the only way that most people can make big money so they throw money at it like sheep. Lest we forget of course that in the UK the odds of winning are 14 million to 1 so 99.99% of people that play are never going to win big, as has already been said you've more chance of being in a plane crash, surviving it and getting hit by lightning on the same day.

It gives people a glimmer of hope that they may win. A former Chancellor of the Exchequer used to do the football pools - another type of lottery. I see it as a means of giving money to charity with a faint hope that I may win. IHowever, i do not base my life on this hope. If you never take a chance, chances are that you will never get a chance. It is only a quid so why worry about it.

If your not in, you can't win.

By the way, it is optional, people are not forced to participate and 'stupid' as well as 'inteligent' people invariably both do stupid and intelligent things. Taking part in the lottery can be either depending on the perspective of the participant.

Hi folks, i won 2.4 million 3 years ago. I bought a bloody big house and some land and built a 9 hole golf course. I stay in Armadale, West lothian and if you think i was stupid to play it then fine, lol. Stupidity then pays, lots! Im set for life and so is my family. I now make more from the golf course than I spend. I know the odds are something like 72million to 1 when worked out properly but somebody has to win eventually. The big man upstairs was smiling on me that day. Oh and I have never been in a car accident.

I wasn't aware that there was a "National Lottery"--only State Lotteries.

But as far as State lotteries go, I would say it is more of a tax on the poor, (rather than the stupid,) taking advantage of those who hope for an easy solution to difficult problems. The rich have no need to play the lottery.

You know I never really looked at it that way before and you have a really good question there.
It is the governments way of raising money and there does have to be one or a few winners in a lottery but the government will always make more money so in a way you are quite right.
I suppose winning is like getting a good tax rebate.

It would be a good thing if it was a voluntary government TAX and if the income could be then used to reduce for example VAT to perhaps under 10%. Lottery Shareholders would not agree of course !

Yes, playing the lottery is such a waste of money. The people that do that might as well just hand their money over to the government.

It's a get out for the government to abdicate responsibillity for paying for things that they should be footing the bill for! Guess who brought it in? That's right, the Tories.
