I thought that was only a possibility if the ankle joint was broken before.

A bad sprain can actually cause more long term damage to a joint than an break, so yes it is possible to get arthritis after a serious sprain. I don't think its very common but I have certainly come across it several times in my career.

i think is'nt common. I've arthritis and consider that u problem is inflammation. the arthritis is very painful and the daily activities is difficult of made.
