I know movie is about 6 months to a year (depending on budget). I'm curious how long does it take for an album to be made (from writing songs to recording to store shelf).

R.E.M took 2 weeks to write, record, produce and mix their Murmur album, and it was in stores 5 weeks after that.

On the other hand, Boston took 6 years to write, record, and produce the multi-platinum album Third Stage.

There are a lot of factors to consider
1. Availability of musicians (Rush took several years to record Vapour Trails as the drummer had some personal issues in his life (death of widfe, death of daughter)
2. Availability of studio time
3. Availability of material
4. Dealing with writers block
5. Dealing with producer's and engineer's agenda (Metallica's Black album almost never was finished due to differences between the band and the producer)

it depends on the band and their record label. some do the whole process in a matter of months, others take years.
