Not sure where you are moving from in Michigan, but Knoxville is a little more expensive in regards to housing and utilities as compared to Grand Rapids and Lansing.

Cost of living indexes (US average=100):
Knoxville:
Housing=68.8
Utilities=92.7

Grand Rapids:
Housing=66.7
Utilities=87.5

Lansing:
Housing=68.9
Utilities=74.5

The real question is where are you coming from? The cost of living in Tennessee is significantly cheaper than most urban areas. Of course, if you are coming from East Podunk Arkansas, then you might have a problem.

Try giving the utility companies there a call, they can usually give you some good averages based on the kind of home you'll be moving into, and how large your family is.
