There was a report the other day on the news about how scam artists are buying old/used phones from e-bay, and other sites and stores and retrieving your old information. So if you have e-mailed important documents, wrote text messages, or have info you wouldn't want to get out on your phone - then I suggest you give your phone to your kids for play time, use it as a paperweight or throw it in a drawer.

There are so many different places that recycle cell phones, either refurbishing them or using the parts to build new ones. Some even offer tax deductions for your cell phone or offer something around $50 for every phone you hand in in cash.

As far as I know, Alltel will usually have a bin in their stores for people to donate their old cell phones to be reprogrammed and given to battered women so they can call for help if need be. That is what I did with mine a year ago anyway.

Many domestic violence shelters and programs collect used cell phones to give to women. They can use them to access emergency services (911) even if they aren't able to purchase other service plans. The emergency calls are free. This may be different from state to state but I donate mine.

I only have 1 old cell phone. I still have it because I never transferred all the old numbers and might still need one someday!
Actually, now that this question reminded me I still have it- I guess I will throw it away!

I donated to my niece's elementary school. Some of my used cell phones I gave them to the women shelters also.

contact your local recycling center. They don't like to put them in landfills as they are bad for the environment. If they work you can donate them to organizations that help victims of domestic abuse. Working cellphones even wihout service can still dial 9-1-1 in case of an emergency.

More often than not I keep them or recycle them.
I have given one to a friend, and have had another that I needed as a backup when my new one had problems.
But I admit I have a couple collecting dust mostly

Donate them to the local abused women's shelter. They activate them to only be able to call 911 if there is an emergency. It could save a life!
