Do the high schools in your area teach auto mechanics? If so, call the teacher and ask if they can help you. Problem is, you may have to be without the car for more time.
Also, if there are any technical schools in your area, they may also teach this class.

I have been the service manager for my dad's garage for the past 12 years. In the past I have worked with numerous people in your same situation. There are many different options, but the one that you're asking for seldom is an option. I have found though that you can:
1. Go to your church, if you attend, and ask for help paying for the repairs.
2. Go to your local Social Services, they have programs for single working parents or families that have extenuating circumstances that need help with car repairs, in our area it is called the Work First Program.
3. As someone already said, go to your local community college or high school, they usually have automotive technical classes and need a car to repair for experience in diagnosing etc.
4. Explain to your boss your circumstances, ask him for the loan and he can automatically deduct a small amount from your check each payday until paid back.
I do hope that you can find someone to help you. Good luck

look in the yellow pages or do a google search in your area for the nearest "occupational training center". These are community trade schools where people learn things like how to be a mechanic. We got our car fixed for the cost of the parts plus $20 labor.

Perhaps you should get a second (or third) job to increase your income. You may be able to get a church or other charity to help you, but the best thing is to stand on your own two feet and earn the money. You want to be able to keep your pride, and not be a drain on society!

Check with your local united way, they sometimes help with this... notice I said sometimes though... for being a non-profit, they tend to be very greedy occassionally
