My friend originally told me he would sell me an '87 RX7 with a new engine (13,000 miles) for $500. Of course, that would be a steal, and he made it sound like it was in decent shape, but it turns out it needs a new suspension just to run. There's plenty of rust, and it needs a new paint job. Then, of course, there's the fact that the interior is ripped apart. New seats would be expensive. So, the price suddenly went from $500 to more like $3,000, although my friend well do all of the work on the car for free provided that I pay for all of the units. Does it make sense to fix this car up or look for another car at around $3,000 which is my max?

I would say dont decide whether to buy the 500 or buy a 3000. shop around and see what other 3000 cars look like and if they are not as good condition than the 500 car after you fixed it, then buy the 500. Of course, if the 3000 car looks good, then get it.

$3000 on a Mazda RX7, rotary engine, sporty, you could do it. But it will be like Moster garage, except it will take a lot longer than 5 days. I personally would do it, if it is a trusted friend. A run of the mill friend can becaome an enemy quick in a situation like that. But if you trust them and the engine is new (not just put in 13k ago from a junk yard) then it could be worth more than your investment if you buy wisely. JCwhitney.com is a great place to shop for cheap parts. Those are actually petty neat little cars, so you may enjoy it. Then again $3000 can make a nice down payment on a better newer car with a warranty. But I like trouble!

Anything else that's about to fall off, maybe the wheel which could come
along whizzing past you whilst you are driving it, "Oh look there goes my
wheel", gear stick about to come off in your hand, exhaust scraping along
the floor, adding a black line confusing other motorists, the boot door
constantly jamming, horn is faulty cannot turn the darn thing off at 3am in
the morning. List could go on, couldn't it. Now personally I wouldn't touch
it with a barge pole, car may crumple with the prod.
Yep you sure have some friend.
Good luck in your choice.
Regards.

Unless you have a particular attraction to this particular Rx7 or it has particularly special equipment on it you can get one already in good shape for 3k or under. This car sounds like someone is trying to get out from under a heap. Not worth it unless you are planning to customize it or something. Check on autotrader.com for reference.
I just found 15 of them with 20 miles of me for under 3k.
Don't let a lack of knowledge put you into a position of making a mistake.
Friends are not friends when something like this goes bad.
Good Luck!

You can buy a nice newer used car for $3000 or less. Don't bother with this car you could end up spending more on things you haven't even noticed are bad yet.
There's better out there, keep looking!

man that is a big deal. my answer to that is don't do it. rx-7's are cool ( i own 4 of them), but rx-7's are really expensive when it comes to parts. just buy a different car.
