1 is not a composite
and 1 is a square: 1^2=1

1 is neither prime nor composite. A prime number must have exactly two *distinct* divisors, itself and 1. A composite number must have more than two, including multiplicities.

It is a square number, however, because it is the square of an integer (even though the integer is itself).
