Some squirrels dig to bury their food, others are digging to find food. The best thing would be to repel the squirrels from your yard. There are a few ways to do this. If it's a small flower bed type of an area, and your climate is appropriate, planting things like fritillaria bulbs will help to repel them. But the most effective repellents can be purchased from most garden/home centers and work by making them think a predator has taken up residence in the area. These repellents contain urine from natural predators like fox. One of these products is called Shake Away ( http://www.critter-repellent.com/ ). Just make sure you use the right version since it works on natural fear and the wrong predator smell won't scare them.

Stop giving them nuts. Actually, concrete sounds the ideal solution. When it's wet, it's an easy place to bury nuts. When it's set the squirrels will wear out their claws trying to dig up the nuts and will eventually starve.

When I'm at home, I shoot them (.22 air rifle), when out I leave a rat trap baited with a peanut, in its shell so birds don't try for it. Hold the peanut in place with blu-tack so the little sods have to set the trap off. If you leave the trap out overnight, put it where hedgehogs can't get to it.

You can shoot them...honestly, I don't think you can ever really stop squirrels from doing anything. There are far too many of them and they will keep coming back...
