oohhh... man... here is my speil i use at work:
BEFORE you sit down in that pedi chair make sure:
1. The tools have been properly sanitized in a hospital grade sanitizer, for the proper amount of time (usually 10 min.)
2. The tub/foot bath has also been properly sanitized.... same way as the tools (NO, bleach does NOT work)
3. Do not allow anyone to CUT off your cuticles/calluses... or anything else...there should be NO RAZORS involved whatsoever
4. Make sure anything that cannot be sanitized (wood, pourous surfaces) have been/will be used on you ALONE
if all that checks out, then sit back and relax! Manicures follow the same guidelines as pedicures.
no one should get angry or annoyed when you ask these questions... if they do, turn around and walk out.
one last thing: The pedicure thrones (the tubs that have plumping through the wall.... know what im talking about?....the thrones are RARELY properly sanitized, best to not use them.
and one last line of defense: do not shave your legs closer than 24 hours prior to your pedicure... when you shave your legs, you cause tiny cuts all over your legs and it leaves you with broken skin that is a freeway for bacteria.

As a former nail tech/manicurist, I know I was always careful to sanitize everything but I've seen others that are not. Go to a reputable salon and try to avoid those chairs with the attached foot bath, allot of time they just get a quick flush with water-as it take a bit of time to clean them with products that kill fungus(and tuberculosis).

yes it did happen to me. i got a toe fungus totally disgusting and it takes about a year to go away. my advice is just do it at home, you can learn how to give yourself a nice pedicure. and btw you can't prevent a fungus if you have a pedicure done at a salon.

I have never had one but I have heard that the foot baths aren't often cleaned and disinfected properly. You could ask that they do this while you are watching or just do your pedicures at home. That's what I do.

Make sure that the person giving the pedicure cleans the foot tub and all of the instruments that they use are in antiseptic soak.

You can ask the staff to check the machine before using with you. If it looks as though it hasn't been cleaned for a while then leave the store 'cause if one is like that then they all are. The chances of you catching something, is pretty good.

Go to a reputable company. All good pedicurists will sanitize between "feet". I have never run into this problem
