You talk about it like it's some sort of club or religion. It's not that organized. It started when one caveman noticed that the other caveman was a slightly different color, and, because he didn't know anything else about the guy, decided that caveman must be in some way inferior because he wasn't exactly the same. Most hatred (and racism is hatred) comes from ignorance.
I can't agree with the idea that Americans started it, because it was the European explorers who decided they could enslave Africans simply because their skin was a different color. There was no United States when (color-based) slavery first came to North America. I believe the Native Americans would take conquered tribes as slaves, and that wouldn't be based on racism as African slavery was.

The first appearance of racism as a theoretical discourse (as opposed to simple xenophobia, which some might argue has existed in all places and times) may be found during the 1688 Glorious Revolution in Great Britain, in Edward Coke or John Lilburne's work.

Racism existed long before man when out ancestors banded together and viewed the world as "us" and "them". Technology has enable people to travel farther an encounter more "thems".
Formalized racism is as old as culture. "Celt" is from the greek "keltoi", outsider. The Romans classified foreigners as "barbarians" since they did not shave.
Despite the rantings of the woefully misinformed, race is a real thing. Many populations have been adequately isolated to produce distinct races. Physical characteristics are distinct enough to establish race from skeletal remains (so forensic anthrpologists apparently are not antropologists). As all races are the same species, blending can and does occur. Will race persist? Maybe, maybe not. Will racism persist? Maybe, hopefully not.

People are born with an intrinsic belief that they are better than others. If their soceity nurtures that belief by teaching that that they are innately better than someone just because of their last name, skin color, or ethnic background, then they grow up the textbook case of a racist. It is only when they accept that all humans are equal and that we are all the same in God's eyes that people can truly get rid of racism. And I don't think race plays a race in racism. A white man is no more racist than a black one. A Hispanic man is no more racist than an Asian one. It's just a matter of how you're raised and the people that you're with that truly determine whether or not you'll be a racist. I maintain that I don't judge on a person's race. If I hate them, it's because they annoy the hell out of me, not because they happen to be white. That's my opinion.

It's a natural instinct for any species. I know most people won't like this answer, but it's true. Ever heard the phrase "birds of a feather flock together?" That's exactly the case. People instinctively feel more comfortable around what they know and those who are similar to themselves, just as animals stick to their own groups and are often aggressive towards those who threaten them and their territory. However, many natural human instincts are frowned upon in a modern society, and so people try and change this behaviour - but it would take many years for this instinct to be completely forgotten.

People started racism because of the lack of education about another race of people. People fear what they don't know and don't take the time to find out about one another.

racism has been around since the dawn of slavery, and not the modern version of slavery... off the top of my head i can think of the Egyptians.. they had slaves.. though I'm sure many of the civilizations before that had slaves.. and though not all slaves were of a certain "race" in those time periods.. there were certain races that were almost always slaves.. therefor they were though of as less, and that fits the modern day definition of racism.

It was inborn. We get it from our hominid ancestors. Note that our species survived, and the other genus Homo species didn't. We probably pushed them into small pockets of marginal land where they eventually died out.
