What's a fun yet professional way to "celebrate" Halloween in a corporate office environment? Are costumes or wacky make up okay?

I think you need to follow the guidelines of your specific work environment. Some places encourage costumes and candy and others would find it inappropriate.

Ask what has happened in past years.

I think this is a good question- I work at a place with 3 other people in my office and about 30 people in production. The people in production don't celebrate Halloween because they don't understand it (they don't even speak English so I can't really explain it to them so that they understand), and the people in the office feel that they are to grown up for that and I am the oldest in the group. I am 31 by the way. They are all under 25. I came in last year with devil horns and a red shirt w/ jeans. Everyone thought I was crazy, but I don't care. And this year I will be an angel, and I still don't care. I say ask around to see what they did last year, then have fun!

it's hard to get professionals to participate.
remember not everyone's religion approves of or recognizes halloween. you could try a potluck or dessert potluck.
try stickers people could put on their clothes after they get to work. in some cases costumes/whacky makeup are not ok, depending on how you interact with the public. check with management on what is ok.

We go all out at my job and have a big party, but I believe each workplace handles this in their own way. Ask at your job beforehand.
